A Look at the Rise of the Slacktivist

There seems to be a lot of slacktivists about these days - those who think their campaigning for change just by wearing some item, or changing their facebook image or whatever - as if that's going to change the world!
My friend wore a lime green bracelet (very nice it looked too!) and proudly told me she was wearing it to support Greenpeace. I didn't really see the connection here. I asked her "what does that achieve?" - and she said that she points out the significance of her bracelet to those she meets and soon enough, they're talking about Greenpeace and their goals - so it's a kind of means to an end.
I can see her point, I guess - but there are many others out there who choose the path of least resistance when it comes to activism - I think it's more to assuage their guilt than to actually achieve anything.
